Democratic AGs Sign Open Letter to U.S. Congress Urging Bipartisanship to Avoid Government Shutdown

September 26, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, a coalition of Democratic state attorneys general signed a letter urging the U.S. Congress to fight back against Donald Trump’s harmful agenda and pass a bipartisan funding bill that will not only avert a government shut down but will also protect essential health care for all Americans.

“We write to you as Democratic attorneys general who are working tirelessly to fight back against President Trump’s destructive, unlawful agenda,” the letter begins. “A key focus of our work has been protecting access to health care. So far this year, we have sued the administration to defend the Affordable Care Act, stop illegal cuts to congressionally mandated funding for health programs, and restore critical public health research dollars across the country. Meanwhile, Trump and his Republican allies rammed through a spending bill that will strip 15 million Americans of their health insurance.”

The letter continues, “While we work to defend the Constitution, uphold the rule of law, and protect the people we serve, we look to Congress as partners in that effort. That means keeping the federal government running by passing a continuing resolution the reflects the needs of the American people.

“Congressional leaders can fulfill their duties and avert a shutdown by passing a bipartisan funding bill that addresses the Trump-induced health care crisis and lowers costs for American families,” the letter concludes. “The alternative will wreak further havoc on our democracy, our healthcare systems, and Americans’ economic wellbeing.”
