ICYMI: Democrat Nick Brown Won WA AG Debates
September 24, 2024
Far-Right Extremist and GOP AG Candidate Pete Serrano Fails to Grasp Significance of AG Office
Washington, DC – The clear winner of last week’s Attorney General debates in Washington state was Democrat Nick Brown.
As The Seattle Times reported, “The candidates met Wednesday in Spokane at a forum hosted by the Association of Washington Business, which on Friday endorsed Brown. They debated again Thursday at Seattle Central College.”
Twice, Brown laid out his dedication to helping the people of Washington while his GOP opponent, Pete Serrano, failed to give explicit answers on how he would serve Washingtonians on everything from abortion access to gun control.
The Seattle Times states, “Wednesday’s debate got sharp at times, with Brown criticizing Serrano for describing people who broke into the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, to challenge the 2020 election results as ‘political prisoners.’”
The article continues, “Brown is the former U.S. attorney for Western Washington and before that, served as legal counsel to Gov. Jay Inslee.” It states that Serrano is “the director and general counsel of a legal foundation that has challenged COVID-19 vaccine mandates and certain state gun laws.”
Key highlights from the debates:
- During the debates, Serrano had no regard for the gun violence, deaths, or suicide rates that affect the people of Washington. The Seattle Times reported, “Serrano, who has challenged state gun laws, including the ban on high-capacity magazines enacted in 2022, has said as attorney general, he wouldn’t defend state laws he believes are unconstitutional.”
- “He has spent much of his career trying to undermine gun safety laws here in Washington state, passed by the people, passed by the Legislature,” Brown said on the debate stage. “He is advocating for more guns, for more dangerous guns. He is advocating for more ammunition in our community. I do not believe that is the answer.”
- Serrano also failed to say whether or not he would protect abortion access. Brown challenged him, saying “it’s crucial that the state AG is advancing the ball on protecting abortion rights.”
- Brown also proudly proclaimed he would enforce Washington’s new shield law that protects patients from criminal investigations in their home state if they were to travel to Washington for abortion care. “We need to protect people within our state, whether they are lifelong residents, whether they’re tourists, or they’re coming here for health care services that they have a right to have,” Brown said. On the other hand, Serrano said he “struggled with that one,” disagreeing with Brown about protecting the women of Washington and patients that travel to the state for abortion care.
Washingtonians deserve someone who will protect and safeguard their rights and will work to build a safer Washington for all. After these debates, it’s clear that Nick Brown is the right choice for the AG office.
