ICYMI: Democratic AGs Are Still Winning Against the Trump Administration
February 21, 2025
As the Trump administration attempts to enact unlawful policies, Democratic AGs are continuing to fight and win in the courts
Washington, DC – Since Donald Trump took office, Democratic Attorneys General have repeatedly demonstrated their commitment to protecting Americans and the rule of law. Dem AGs have been quick to respond to the unconstitutional and unlawful actions Trump has attempted to execute, repeatedly taking the Trump administration to court to block his dangerous, un-American agenda.
In just the past four weeks, Dem AGs have successfully blocked at least three executive orders in the courts, including a ruling that blocked Elon Musk and DOGE from accessing sensitive Treasury Department data.
Here’s a recap of Dem AGs hitting the airwaves to discuss their wins and ongoing lawsuits:
New Jersey AG Matthew Platkin on CBS Evening News with Major Garrett:

- “…they’ve told so many mistruths, half truths, and outright lies that I think if you’re sitting there, and if you are a Social Security recipient, if you’re a Medicaid participant, if you rely on the federal government for, literally your life and sustenance as so many Americans do, I think you should be very concerned about the fact that this unelected billionaire is saying one thing and taking your data on the other hand.”
- “Elon Musk is not actually trying to tackle waste, fraud, and abuse. What they’re doing is running roughshod over the federal bureaucracy in order to steal American’s data…They have said through the courts that they actually did take data.”
- “He [Elon Musk] brought 19, 20 year old hackers with them. He didn’t bring budget experts. He didn’t bring governmental experts. He brought kids who don’t know anything that they’re doing.”
Massachusetts AG Andrea Campbell on All in with Chris Hayes:

- “Courts have sided with us in numerous cases. To say these actions are not only unconstitutional but that the president does not have the authority via an executive order or a sharpie to rewrite the Constitution.”
- “Because what they recognize to be true and I think every person regardless of their party affiliation should care is that our Constitution is a contract we are promised benefits and privileges all of the rights We probably at times take for granted. These are guaranteed and if this gets unraveled by one man, we’re in trouble. So our job as AG is to protect our constituents and of course our economy.”
Colorado AG Phil Weiser on “The Katie Phang Show”:

- “We’ve got systems in place to ensure that our government operations work effectively. Those systems were being disregarded and the laws weren’t being faithfully executed. Instead, we saw a lot of risky experiments. That’s why we took action.”
- “The NIH funding, it’s about critical medical research helping to save lives. People who are struggling with cancer or diabetes, they want this reaches go forward. We’ve got a vibrant economy here in Colorado. And if all these steps to cut in NIH funding, to stop federal critical programs, and to threaten our sense of information, if it goes through, we’re going to feel it, that’s why we’re fighting back in court.”
- “One of the points that I would make just on what you said is we have a republic as long as we can keep it. That means we have to safeguard our core values which is a presidency with limited power and separation of powers that’s what’s at stake in this moment.”
Connecticut AG William Tong on “The Weekend”:
- “You know, there’s this sense of the president is flooding the zone. Well, Democratic AGs are flooding it back.”
- “You know, at the end of the day, this is the problem with the birthright citizenship case and so many other issues and actions that Donald Trump has taken. You cannot amend the Constitution with a stroke of a pen. You cannot do it without Congress. You cannot do it without the states. He is not a king and he is trying to act like one.”
Nevada AG Aaron Ford “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart”:

- “It’s like my mother used to say, it’s not what you say is how you say it. In this instance, it’s not what you do, it’s how you do it. And what he is doing and how he is doing it, it’s unlawful. That’s why we’ve been able to prevail thus far in court on this suit and others as well.”
- “We received hundreds, if not a thousand complaints about the access that Elon Musk and his so-called DOGE would have to the personal private information by virtue of this arrangement with the Department of Treasury. And that’s why we sprung to action with attorneys general from across the nation to protect our respective constituencies from this unconstitutional act.”
- “Mr. Trump won the election. He has the right to enact his policies, but he must do so lawfully. When he does not act in a lawful manner, whether it’s violating statutes or violating the Constitution, I will not only meet him in court, I will defeat him in court. And we have demonstrated that already three times in a matter of a couple of weeks.”
Rhode Island AG Peter Neronha on “PoliticsNation”:

- “Everywhere we filed so far, we’ve won. We’re gonna continue to win because this president is operating in a lawless manner. He’s hoping to get away with this lawlessness, but we’re gonna hold him to account.”
- “I’m confident that we’re going to continue to rack up these wins because this president either doesn’t understand the law or more likely just has decided to ignore it.”
Colorado AG Weiser on “Velshi on MSNBC”:

- “This is not how the government should be functioning. There are clear rules and guidelines. All we’re asking is that we follow the rules and that we make sure the government works for people.”
Washington AG Nick Brown on CNN’s The Lead with Jake Tapper:

- “This is the first step in many, but it was a great start to defending our Constitution, defending democracy, and defending what it means to be an American in this country. So we’re really happy with the result.”
- “I think it’s important for people to remember that the 14th Amendment was passed in perhaps the most infamous Supreme Court decision in United States history: the Dred Scott decision. And this was passed through to reaffirm that people in the United States, then newly freed slaves, were citizens just like everyone else. And that has been the legacy of the United States of America for generations now…”
Connecticut AG William Tong and Minnesota AG Keith Ellison on “Velshi on MSNBC”:

- “It’s so blatantly unconstitutional,” AG Tong said. “And you can’t flip these words in different ways and try to create ambiguity in what is not a statute, not a law, not a regulation. It’s the Constitution, folks. And you can’t change it by the stroke of a pen.”
- “What they’re trying to do is drive a narrative that there are deserving, accepted, and approved Americans, and there are others who are not.,” AG Ellison said.
New Jersey AG Matthew Platkin on MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation”:

- “…states will be left picking up the slack here because if you don’t provide citizenship to these children, children born on American soil, again, for the first time since the Civil War, you put them in some subclass of citizenship or residency unclear based on the order…That would both harm the individuals and the kids that are born here, but also states like New Jersey.”
- “But people have constitutional rights in this country. And those rights did not change from November 5th to November the 6th. And we’re going to make sure that those rights are protected.”
- “We were successful 80% of the time that states sued the administration and the first Trump administration. That’s a historically unprecedented rate. And that’s because they violated the law at a historically unprecedented rate…And all we’re doing here… is we are standing up for the rule of law.”
Illinois AG Kwame Raoul on CNN Newsroom Anchor:

- “I think this [mass deportations] is going to have an upsetting effect on our economy, on the stability of our communities. These are people who make contributions, pay taxes and are just part of the fabric of our community here in Chicago and throughout the nation.”
California AG on CBS Evening News with Major Garrett:

- “It’s Trump trampling the US Constitution. It’s an attack on US citizens and children, it’s un-American conduct and a judge has already declared the executive order is unconstitutional.”
- “They [ICE Immigration services] may do their job, but they may not force California and local law enforcement to do their job for them. We want to focus on enforcing the criminal laws of the state of California, arresting and prosecuting criminals, not being involved in civil immigration enforcement.”
