ICYMI: Democratic AGs Win Lawsuit Restoring AmeriCorps Funding, Join MSNBC to Talk Future Litigation
June 9, 2025
WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, a judge ruled in favor of all 23 Democratic attorneys general who brought on a lawsuit against the Trump administration for unlawfully cutting already allocated federal funds from the national volunteer service AmeriCorps. The judge ordered the administration to fully restore AmeriCorps-funded programs in Washington, D.C. and in the 24 Democratic-led states participating in the suit, which included the governors of Pennsylvania and Kentucky.
Reuters Nate Raymond writes, “Democratic state attorneys general argued Trump lacks the authority under the U.S. Constitution to gut AmeriCorps, which was created by Congress, and that the agency failed to follow proper procedures before altering program services.”

Over the weekend, Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, and Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul took to TV to highlight the latest lawsuit win and reaffirm their commitment to holding the Trump administration accountable as it continues to violate the rule of law.

Key highlights:
- “And Trump has had to appeal to the United States Supreme Court quite often because we’re beating him in the courts below,” AG Jennings said. “And right now, this Democratic State Attorneys General are the strongest bulwark that this country has against Donald Trump’s cruel and arbitrary decisions.”
- “And what I believe is that we’re going to prevail whatever court we are in because we have the law and the United States Constitution on our side, we’re going to continue to fight and we are going to continue to win,” AG Jennings said.
- “This administration is being reckless, they’re acting hastily and the way DOGE has gone about their work is very concerning,” AG Weiser said.
- “There’s not a single action that we have filed because we have a policy difference with the administration...but we filed each and every case because the Constitution has been thrown out the window,” AG Raoul said. “The laws enacted by Congress have been thrown out the window. We filed these lawsuits because they’ve been pursued illegally.”
- “We cannot stand aside as attorneys general or as a public at large when we have a President of the United States who took an oath to uphold the Constitution who’s saying that he doesn’t know whether he has to follow the Constitution,” AG Raoul said.
- “And when he breaks the law and we have the legal tools in our toolbox, which we tend to have pretty strongly, we’re going to fight him,” AG Jennings said.
- “And so like my fellow AGs, protecting the Constitution is personal to me. I’m not afraid of standing up for what I believe in,” AG Weiser said. “I recognize that we’re living in a very dark time and a time when people who are elected officials, even judges, are being targeted, but we’re fighting for something we believe in. And we have work to do. We have our own obligations to the Constitution.”
