Here is what happened this week for DAGA and our Democratic Attorneys General:

WELCOME TO THE TEAM, AG UNDERWOOD: Following the New York state legislature’s appointment of Barbara Underwood as New York Attorney General this week, DAGA co-chairs District of Columbia AG Karl Racine and Oregon AG Ellen Rosenblum extended a warm welcome to the AG Underwood noting, “We look forward to leading alongside Attorney General Underwood as we continue our important work to uphold the rule of law, protect our democracy, and fight for the people in our states.”

NO GAG RULE: This week, President Trump announced plans to cut funding to Planned Parenthood by removing their eligibility for Title X funding. Trump’s proposal puts the health care for more than 40 percent of federal program’s 4 million patients at risk. Democratic AGs were quick to call out this blatant attack on reproductive rights and access to healthcare. California AG Xavier Becerra submitted a letter to the federal government opposing the proposed regulation that undermines Title X family planning and requesting a meeting with OMB and HHS to share California’s concerns.

Additionally, last week, 20 Democratic AGs filed a brief to stand with Planned Parenthood and voice their support for lawsuits challenging Trump administration rule changes that will reduce access to family planning services. For more on this, check out the Washington Post piece linked here.

WARNING FOR SECRETARY RICK PERRY:  This week, Massachusetts AG Maura Healey led a coalition of ten Democratic AGs in filing commentswarning Energy Secretary Rick Perry that he cannot claim emergency powers under the Federal Power Act (FPA) to help failing power plants. These comments are tied to utility giant FirstEnergy asking Secretary Perry for an emergency bailout of its aging, polluting, and unprofitable power plants. SPOTTED: DAGA co-chair and District of Columbia Attorney General Karl Racine with Hillary Clinton to raise funds for kids and celebrate the 20th anniversary of Maya Angelou Schools & the See Forever Foundation. It’s great to see Democratic leaders coming together to support opportunities for all.
