With 48 days left to go until Election Day, races for Attorney General continue to lead national conversations on critical issues like healthcare, immigration, and the opioid epidemic. This week, Alice Ollstein at POLITICO covered how the healthcare debate is helping Democratic AG candidates in key flip states noting that “Democrats seeking to claim as many as a half dozen attorney general seats are using a lawsuit brought by 20 Republican AGs to abolish Obamacare as a political battering ram — highlighting its threat to the health law’s popular protections for people with pre-existing conditions.”  In states like Arizona, Texas, and Wisconsin, where the Republican incumbents are actively working to dismantle these popular ACA protections, Democratic candidates like Justin Nelson, January Contreras, and Josh Kaul are making sure voters know what is at stake.

An approach and an issue that clearly resonates with voters.

• POLITICO-Morning Consult poll from early September found that registered voters of every age group indicated that they trust Democrats in Congress more than Republicans to protect people with pre-existing conditions.
• A Kaiser Family Foundation poll found that 75 percent of the public believe it’s “very important” to preserve the ACA’s protections for people with pre-existing conditions, including nearly 60 percent of Republicans.
• An earlier June poll found that nearly two-thirds of voters say a candidate’s support for continued protections for people with preexisting health conditions is either the “single most important factor” or “very important” to their vote in the upcoming midterms.

It is more than clear that the GOP’s attack on the healthcare of millions is going to be an integral issue for voters at the polls where Republicans are vying to hold onto their seats or where new GOP candidates are looking to keep seats red. For that reason, Democratic candidates like Aaron Ford in Nevada, Charlie Bailey in Georgia, and Sean Shaw in Florida are fighting back and holding their opponents accountable–pushing to find out whether they will join the GOP campaign to dismantle healthcare for millions of Americans or will they fight to protect this critical care that 75% of Americans believe is crucial?

On November 6^th, Americans will go to the polls to elect AGs in more than 30 states. The stakes are high. If the Republican-led lawsuit is successful, protections will be repealed for 130 million people with preexisting conditions. With healthcare often ranking a top voting issues in states across the country, we expect this issue to be top of mind as we enter the final weeks before Election Day.
