ICYMI: VA AG Mark Herring Outlines Accomplishments & Endorsements Ahead of VA GOP Convention

May 7, 2021

In case you missed it, Virginia AG Mark Herring released his office’s 2020 accomplishments, talked about his strong progressive record, and highlighted key endorsements ahead of a VA GOP nominating convention that has been labeled “a logistical nightmare.”

On Tuesday, AG Herring released his annual report highlighting key victories and actions by his office over the last year, including:

  • Worked with the legislature to pass important criminal justice and policing reforms, including:
    • Reforming the decertification process to remove unfit officers.
    • Banning chokeholds.
    • Banning “no knock” warrants.
  • Eliminated Virginia’s backlog of untested sexual assault kits.
  • Filed a lawsuit to ensure that Virginia’s ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment is recognized, and that the ERA is added to the U.S. Constitution.
  • Worked with the General Assembly to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana and place the Commonwealth on a path towards legal, regulated adult use.
  • Updated Virginia’s definition of a hate crime and empowered the Attorney General’s Office to prosecute hate crimes through the Commonwealth’s network of grand juries.

On Wednesday, AG Herring outlined his strong progressive record, accomplishments, and endorsements during the first Democratic debate, including:

  • Creating the Office of Civil Rights to protect Virginians from discrimination.
  • Fighting in the U.S. Supreme Court to protect the Affordable Care Act and Virginians’ health care, including protections for those with pre-existing conditions.
  • Defending Virginia’s new gun violence prevention measures from legal attacks by the NRA and the gun lobby, helping him to secure the endorsements of the Brady PAC, Giffords, and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence.

The Washington Post said AG Herring, “has built a record as one of the most liberal attorneys general in Virginia’s history.”

Re-electing AG Herring ensures that Virginians have someone with the experience needed in the Office of Attorney General to keep the Commonwealth moving forward and pursuing progress.
