Georgia’s Attorney General Seat on Track to Turn Blue in 2022, As Carr Tries to Distance Himself from Insurrection

Washington, DC— Georgia Democratic Attorney General candidates Charlie Bailey and Jen Jordan announced impressive fundraising totals in the first half of 2021, making the race competitive to unseat incumbent Republican Attorney General Chris Carr.  

State Senator Jen Jordan announced her campaign raised $100,000 more than Republican incumbent AG Carr, with a total of nearly $675,000 raised since the campaign launched on April 14, 2021. Candidate Charlie Bailey, who lost to Carr in the Attorney General race in 2018 by only 100,000 votes, announced his campaign has raised $573,000 since he entered the race in January.

“The momentum is on the side of Democrats to flip the Georgia AG’s seat blue. Chris Carr’s failed leadership as AG – from attempting to take away health care access during a pandemic to undermining voting rights – have Georgians looking for a true people’s lawyer as their AG,” said Amanda Trump, Deputy Political Director for the Democratic Attorneys General Association. “Chris Carr is put on notice. The fundraising totals reinforce that this race is competitive and the energy is with Democrats.”

During the reporting period, Carr raised $574,000; the new fundraising totals show the state’s two Democratic candidates have made the race extremely competitive in the wake of Democrats winning the Senate and Presidential races in 2020. 

In April, Carr resigned both as the chairman and a member of the executive committee of the Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA). The Rule of Law Defense Fund, an affiliate of RAGA also governed by sitting Republican AGs and that leads the policy work for RAGA, paid for robocalls to supporters, inciting them to march on the U.S. Capitol to “stop the steal.” The resulting attack left five people dead and more than 150 police officers injured.

“Carr can’t hide from his involvement in the insurrection,” added Trump. “DAGA is preparing to fight to pick up this seat in 2022.”
