Washington, DC — Today, the U.S. Senate voted on the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), and the vote, needing 60 to pass, failed 49 to 51. While the Senators who voted to pass WHPA are working to protect abortion, there are simply not enough votes to pass federal protections for access to reproductive health care. It must fall on state leaders to defend abortion rights. Democratic Attorneys General are on the front lines of the national fight to protect abortion access and will defend reproductive health care in their state as Roe v. Wade hangs in the balance.

“While we thank the Senators who voted today to protect the right to abortion in this country, today’s failed WHPA vote is a sign of what we’ve long known: the fight for abortion rights is in the states. Far-right Republicans have hijacked Washington, DC, and we need to elect leaders at the state level who will protect and defend abortion access. As Democratic Attorneys General, we will never back down when it comes to protecting abortion access. We are on the front lines of this fight, and we are already doing the work to defend reproductive health care.”

“The importance of down ballot races this year cannot be overstated. This fight lies squarely in the states, and we need to show up at the ballot box and vote for Democratic Attorneys General who will never let up on the work to safeguard people’s right to abortion.”
