ICYMI: Historic Week for Dem AGs

August 26, 2024

Washington, DC – Last week, two sitting Democratic Attorneys General and eight former Democratic AGs gave powerful speeches at the Democratic National Convention. Former California AG and Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination for President of the United States with a significant focus on her accomplishments as Attorney General in her speech.

DAGA President Sean Rankin spoke on the significance of last week saying, “With two current AGs and eight former AGs taking the stage at the DNC — including a former AG at the top of the Presidential ticket — the convention was a truly historical moment for our country. More Americans than ever are beginning to understand the cornerstone role that Democratic AGs play in the execution of our democracy. From taking on bad actors to defending abortion rights and keeping our streets safe — they are the bench of the Democratic Party, and we’re proud to see them getting the attention they deserve.”

“I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations.  A president who leads and listens; who is realistic, practical, and has common sense; and always fights for the American people. From the courthouse to the White House, that has been my life’s work. As a young courtroom prosecutor in Oakland, California — I stood up for women and children against predators who abused them. As attorney general of California, I took on the big banks — delivered $20 billion for middle-class families who faced foreclosure and helped pass a homeowner bill of rights, one of the first of its kind in the nation.”

VP Harris continued, “I stood up for veterans and students being scammed by big for-profit colleges — for workers who were being cheated out of their wages, the wages they were due — for seniors facing elder abuse. I fought against the cartels who traffic in guns and drugs and human beings — who threaten the security of our border and the safety of our communities. And I will tell you, these fights were not easy and neither were the elections that put me in those offices. We were underestimated at practically every turn, but we never gave up, because the future is always worth fighting for. And that’s the fight we are in right now: a fight for America’s future.”

The sitting AGs who spoke at the convention were Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. AG Nessel spoke about VP Harris’s strong leadership. I know, whether she’s Attorney General or President of the United States, Kamala Harris will always be in our corner,” AG Nessel said. “We know when she takes the oath to preserve, protect, and defend the constitution, she’s actually read it.”

AG Ellison then highlighted both Gov. Tim Walz and VP Haris’s commitment to listening to the American people.

“Selling defective goods is a scam,” AG Ellison said. “And like Kamala Harris, I am an Attorney General. And Attorneys General know what a scam is when they see it. Like my friend Tish James for example from New York, America, we won’t be scammed again.”

Along with the two AGs and VP Harris, several other former AGs spoke including:

  • Gov. Josh Shapiro (Pennsylvania)
  • Gov. Maura Healey (Massachusetts)
  • Former Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan
  • Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (Nevada)
  • Gov. Roy Cooper (North Carolina)
  • Former President Bill Clinton (Arkansas)
