WASHINGTON, DC – Last night, Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones was the standout winner over Republican AG Jason Miyares as the two faced off on the debate stage just weeks before Election Day. Jones let Virginians know that he will always fight for justice, protect abortion rights, and work to keep Virginia and its communities safe. He also elaborated on his three-pillar public safety plan and his goal in establishing a Drug Trafficking Unit in the AGs office to combat the fentanyl crisis.  

Jones also took the chance to call out Miyares for his complete failure to stand up to Donald Trump as his administration’s reckless actions are harming the Commonwealth. “What we have here in Virginia right now is an attorney general who won’t hold the president accountable,’” Jones said. “For the last nine months, Donald Trump has run roughshod over this Commonwealth. Jason Miyares has had more than 50 opportunities to sue the administration to protect our values, our ideals, and the things we hold near and dear. Workers have been fired illegally. This government shutdown continues, and they tried to fire workers who are on furlough right now.” 

Jones continues, “He’s [Miyares] talking a lot about prosecuting cases, but he can’t seem to prosecute a case against Donald Trump to save his life. There are people in Virginia who are going to lose health care. There are communities that are going to lose funding for K-12 and law enforcement because you haven’t stepped up to sue the president.” 

MAGA Miyares had every opportunity last night to reassure Virginians that he will fight for them and hold Trump accountable for trampling over the law. Instead, in true Miyares fashion, he failed to explain why he refuses to be a voice against an administration that has caused irreparable damage to the Commonwealth. If he can’t do that on the debate stage, how can Virginians trust him to defend their rights and freedoms? 

The bottom line: MAGA Miyares has proven he is too weak to stand up to Trump. Jones, on the other hand, is ready to hold Trump accountable when he violates the law and will stop at nothing to do the right thing for the Commonwealth.
