Washington, DC – Today, the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) announced a legal defense fund to help defend Democratic attorneys general and their staff who are targeted for political retribution by the Trump administration. This legal defense fund will help defray the costs of retaliatory legal action taken by the Trump administration against attorneys general who are doing their jobs: holding lawbreakers – no matter who they are – accountable, standing up for the rule of law, and upholding the constitutions of both their own states and of the United States.

Statement from Sean Rankin, President of DAGA:

“While Democratic attorneys general are on the front lines fighting to protect the rights and freedoms of all Americans, President Trump has demonstrated his eagerness to ignore the law and target anyone who disagrees with him. Trump has overtly threatened elected officials who seek to hold him accountable for actions that break the law or run afoul of the Constitution, and he’s specifically targeting Democratic AGs. Last Friday, he pushed out a sitting US Attorney in Virginia who refused to indict New York AG Tish James, as she has done nothing wrong. With the appointment of an unqualified candidate as a replacement, we expect the attacks on AG James to escalate, as well as new politically motivated actions against other AGs.

“Attorneys general who fight unlawful or unconstitutional actions taken by the Trump administration risk retaliation in the form of harassment, frivolous lawsuits, and now, potentially worse. Our AGs have been working non-stop to block Trump’s myriad abuses of the law and defend the American public. As they continue to fight these battles, DAGA is committed to protecting them from the Trump administration’s unjust and reckless lawfare. DAGA’s legal defense fund will be here to support them, and we’re asking the public to support this fund by contributing.”
