DAGA Co-Chair Statement on SCOTUS Gutting Voting Rights Act
April 30, 2026
WASHINGTON, DC – The Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) released the following statement after the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a key provision in the Voting Rights Act (VRA), a decision that will disenfranchise minority voters across the country and gut voting rights for many Americans.
Statement from Illinois AG Kwame Raoul and Minnesota AG Keith Ellison, DAGA Co-Chairs:
“The Supreme Court handed down a shameful decision that will limit the voting power of Americans of color across the country, allowing for racial discrimination to proliferate. For 60 years, the VRA has safeguarded voting rights of minorities and ensured equal representation for Americans who have been harmed by centuries of systemic racism. The decision is not only an abhorrent attack on our democracy, but a direct attack on our Civil Rights. The GOP and the Trump administration have continually tried to undermine the people of this country and silence the voices of opposition with thinly veiled threats and intimidation, weaponizing a system that is supposed to work for and by the people of this country.
“As Democratic AGs, as defenders of the Constitution and democracy, we will not let Republicans’ attempt at rigging our elections to take hold. We will use every tool to defend Americans’ right to vote as we always have. The fight is far from over.”
