DAGA Co-Chair Statement on SCOTUS Ruling on Nationwide Injunctions in Birthright Citizenship Suits

June 30, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a ruling that effectively prohibits individual federal district court judges from issuing nationwide injunctions, even in cases where one is necessary to protect a fundamental constitutional right. The Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) released the following statement on the SCOTUS ruling.

Statement from DAGA Co-Chairs Delaware AG Kathy Jennings and Illinois AG Kwame Raoul:

“Today’s Supreme Court decision preserves our opportunity to seek a necessary universal injunction in this case. It also serves as a stark reminder of why it’s so important to elect Democrats to state Attorney General offices. A patchwork of injunctions is impracticable, and individual rights and freedoms should not have to depend on if your state AG is willing to take this lawless administration to court. Birthright citizenship remains the law of the land and we remain confident that our arguments for complete relief will prevail as every single district court has ruled in our favor.

“We are proud of our Democratic state attorneys general who have stepped up to hold the Trump administration accountable for his lawlessness. Make no mistake, Democratic AGs will always stand up for Americans, for the Constitution, and the rule of law—and we invite our Republican colleagues to join us in fighting for the freedoms and liberties that our Constitution guarantees. The fight is far from over.”
