December 6, 2019

Here is what happened this week for DAGA and our Democratic Attorneys General:

ON THE TRAIL

READY FOR RE-ELECTION
North Carolina AG Josh Stein
announced his candidacy for re-election on Thursday, pledging to continue efforts to combat the opioid epidemic, eliminate the backlog of untested sexual assault kits, protect kids from Juul, defend the right to vote, and protect the population from robocalls. DAGA Co-Chair’s Oregon AG Ellen Rosenblum said, “AG Stein is a steadfast, thoughtful leader who we trust to do what is right for North Carolina. We look forward to supporting his successful re-election,“ and Massachusetts AG Maura Healey said, “As he announces his bid for re-election, we stand with AG Stein and are ready to battle back the millions the GOP will pour into North Carolina. We’re confident AG Stein will win re-election in 2020.“ See AG Stein’s quick announcement video here.

MULTI-STATE MOMENTS!

DEM AGS FIGHT FOR REPRODUCTIVE FREEDOM
New York AG Tish James
alongside California AG Xavier Becerra, Colorado AG Phil Weiser and 19 other Dem AGs are taking the fight for reproductive freedom to the Supreme Court. In a friend of the court brief, the Democratic AG coalition expressed support for the abortion provider in June Medical Services LLC v. Gee and argued for the protection of reproductive rights for women across the nation. Read more about the brief here.

AG SPOTLIGHT!

CONNORS JOINS THE FIGHT FOR TRANS RIGHTS
Hawaii AG Clare Connors
joined a coalition of 23 Democratic AGs in their support of a transgender student who filed an anti-discrimination lawsuit against the Gloucester County School Board in Virginia.  Gavin Grimm, a former student at Gloucester High School, sued the local school board in 2015—while he was still in school—for discrimination when the school banned him from using the common male restrooms.  “The school board’s actions violate both Title IX and the Equal Protection Clause of the US Constitution,” said AG Connors. “Our state has a longstanding commitment to protect the rights of the transgender community, and joining this brief reflects this policy.”  The coalition filed an amicus brief in the Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in support of Grimm. (DEM) PARTY WITH AG HEALEY
This week, DAGA Co-Chair Massachusetts AG Maura Healey joined Senator Elizabeth Warren, DNC Chair Tom Perez, DNC Vice Chair Mike Blake, and Enes Kanter at the I Will Vote event in support of Democratic unity in 2020.
