DAGA Statement on the Major Escalations to Take over Law Enforcement in D.C.
August 19, 2025
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) released the following statement on the major escalations of President Trump’s efforts to take over law enforcement in D.C. and Republican governors sending in their National Guard to the city.
Statement from DAGA Co-Chairs Delaware AG Kathy Jennings and Illinois AG Kwame Raoul:
“This is outrageous. D.C. did not ask for the National Guard to be sent in to handle their local policing matters. Let’s call this what it is: the President is politicizing the National Guard to distract Americans from the very real fact that his policies are not only unpopular, they’re hurting families, increasing health care costs, stripping away rights, and cutting funding for critical programs. We also know this will not start and end in D.C. The President has made his intentions very clear that he wants to abuse his powers to take over other cities, using these troops as a tool to advance his political agenda – a major step towards authoritarianism. We stand with Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, Chair of the Democratic Governors Association, in urging Republican governors to reject these efforts.
“We also strongly support D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb and his work to stand up for his residents’ rights and safety. D.C. residents have a fighter in AG Schwalb, and we’ll fight right alongside him in protecting our democracy and civil liberties.”
