WASHINGTON, DC – Yesterday, SCOTUS sided with Democratic AGs to put an end to Trump’s  unconstitutional attempt to disenfranchise millions of voters by restricting mail-in ballots, securing a massive win for the Democratic AGs and for our democratic process.

“You know, of all the things that we get to work on as state attorney generals this is probably the most important because it is the foundation of our democracy,” Washington AG Nick Brown told Ali Velshi. “And the president really doesn’t care about that. He continually lies about our system. He continually lies about his own success in elections. And that is why it is so important that we remind people that state and local officials are empowered to administer our elections with good reason.”

Key highlights:

• “But we need to be continually mindful of the variety of different attacks that the Trump administration has tried to impose on states to limit our ability to vote. And so although this is a really important victory and there’s a big sense of relief across our states, we still have to approach this with a great deal of seriousness moving forward.”
• “We’ve shown time and time again that the system that we have in place here, which is similar to the system in Oregon, most of California, Utah as well, that this system works. It’s a fair and just way to vote. It gives more people opportunity to vote. And it has been used without real problems for many, many years.”
• “So no one president, no one person in the highest office can dictate how democracy moves forward. And so it’s a really important step for us, but there’s a lot of things we have to watch.”
• “Study after study, audits by state and local officials, studies by nonpartisan and partisan groups have all shown that really this nonsense claim of undocumented people voting in our elections is not based on any evidence. And so the reason for Trump is to scare people. I mean, I think that is explicitly the case now, that he does not want people to vote en masse because he knows that his positions are politically unpopular.”
• “I have no doubt, as the president gets closer to his last days in office, that he will continue to try to disrupt our elections, continue to lie about the strength of our democracy, and to try to continue to undermine your right to vote and people’s rights to vote. And so we need to make sure that we continue to demonstrate that we can do this smoothly and survive any challenges that makes its way to SCOTUS.”
