James To Serve As First African American Woman To Hold Statewide Office in New York
Washington, D.C.— The Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) released the following statement from Executive Director Sean Rankin congratulating Tish James on winning the New York Attorney General’s seat. James will continue the Democratic leadership of the New York OAG currently led by Attorney General Barbara Underwood. Through its aggressive recruitment for qualified candidates and the launch of the 1881 Initiative, DAGA assembled the most diverse class of attorney general candidates in history including James, who will be the first African-American woman to hold statewide office in New York and only the second woman to serve as New York Attorney General.
Statement from Sean Rankin, Executive Director of the Democratic Attorneys General Association:
“We applaud Tish James and her campaign on winning the New York Attorney General race. New York needs a leader like James to continue the strong work of Attorney General Barbara Underwood. James has spent her career standing up for those without a voice. The transition from being a protector of the people’s interests as Public Advocate to the people’s lawyer as New York AG is a natural one.”
“Right now, we need leaders in our states and at the national level who are ready to fight for people. Democratic Attorneys General have come together like never before to work together and fight as a team. James’ role as a watchdog on government in New York City is the kind of training that will make her an incredibly effective watchdog on the federal government and national voice. We look forward to welcoming her into our room and watching her lead as New York AG.”
