ICYMI: AG Kris Mayes Commits to Protecting Arizona’s Water Supply
October 23, 2026
WASHINGTON, DC – Attorney General Kris Mayes says the fight to protect Arizonans’ water rights is nonnegotiable.
“‘I don’t go to a single event where water is not brought up in some way,’” AG Mayes told The Washington Post. “‘This is not an esoteric, academic issue. This is a kitchen table, existential economic issue that is facing Arizonans.”
Key highlights:
- “Asked about the top issue facing Arizona, voters were more likely to pick water than they were to pick inflation, education or housing costs, one recent poll found — a shift from previous election years. Anxiety about the issue crosses party lines and demographics.”
- “Mayes and Hobbs have both touted their role in cracking down on a Saudi-owned farm that used copious water to grow alfalfa shipped abroad — a controversy that made headlines and that many voters remember.”
AG Mayes also released a new ad emphasizing her commitment to protecting water in the state, suing companies that abuse the water supply and who would inevitably put Arizonans at risk.

AZ AG Kris Mayes: It takes about 12 gallons of water to grow just one alfalfa plant.
But there’s a Saudi owned mega farm in Arizona growing billions of them.
Using more water than every household in Glendale combined.
That’s why I sued, just like I sued other companies abusing Arizona’s water supply.
I’m Attorney General Kris Mayes, and if it’s Arizona’s water, I’ll always fight to protect it, because a threat to our water is a threat to our future.
