ICYMI: Democratic AGs Take to TV to Talk Win on Tariff Lawsuit
February 24, 2026
Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, California AG Rob Bonta, and Oregon AG Dan Rayfield discuss what this ruling means for American businesses and consumers
WASHINGTON, DC – Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Democratic AGs as it struck down the Trump administration’s attempt to implement harmful tariffs on the American people. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes, California Attorney General Rob Bonta, and Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield took to TV to discuss the significance of the win and what future actions will need to be taken by the federal government to ensure businesses and the American people are properly reimbursed for the harm the tariffs have caused.

Kris Mayes on Politics Nation:
- “This was a great day for America, frankly. It was a great day for families across this country who now don’t have to deal… with the $1000 on average, additional money that they were paying on goods. Basically these tariffs…were essentially a tax on the people of this country…”
- “It was a great day for our Constitution because the Supreme Court remained faithful to our Constitution. And the court made it clear that Congress is the only body that can engage in tariffs, which are taxes, that Congress holds the power of the purse.”
- “But I will promise you this. The Democratic Attorneys General will continue to fight for the American people, and we will continue to fight in the courts if we have to.”
- “The small businesses of this country deserve to get their money back. The consumers of this country deserve to get their money back. Again, the average family has been overcharged by a thousand dollars as a result of these tariffs. And Trump has illegally taken that money from American families and from American businesses. And so I call upon the Trump administration to immediately set up a refund process…”
California AG Rob Bonta On Bloomberg TV:
- “I feel that it’s an important amount of relief that’s being delivered for the American people, including Californians, for consumers who are paying higher prices, for workers who’ve lost their jobs, for businesses, including small mom and pops who have struggled, some have shuttered their businesses never to open again.”
- “So this is important relief delivered to them, and it calls out Trump’s unlawfulness for what it is. He literally acted illegally to raise prices for the American people after saying that he was going to lower prices on day one. It was a lie, his statement, and it was improper and inappropriate what he has done. He owes many businesses a refund and needs to pay up.”
- “We’ve brought 58 lawsuits in less than fifty 58 weeks against the Trump administration for repeated illegal conduct. And so we will assess whether any of his actions going forward in the tariff space are lawful or not. And if he breaks the law again and hurts California again Yeah. We’ll take him to court.”

Oregon AG Dan Rayfield on MS Now:
- “The federal government did this. They did it when they knew they were going to lose. Their lawyers probably told him this was unconstitutional. They had two lower court rulings telling them, hey, this is unconstitutional, and they plowed ahead anyway. It is their responsibility to figure it out. They can figure it how to do tax refunds, and they better figure out how to put that money back in Americans’ pockets. You just don’t get to take money away from Americans unconstitutionally without doing it.”
- “And in this case, it was very clear that the federal government screwed up. They violated the Constitution in taking our money, American people’s money…”
- “My job and our job for Oregonians in America as attorneys general is to make sure that executives, like the president, follow the law. That’s our job.”
