Gov. Kelly on Kobach’s Lawsuit: “Low-rent political theater”
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, a Kansas judge dismissed a meritless lawsuit brought by Republican Attorney General Kris Kobach against Gov. Laura Kelly after she defended Kansans data privacy rights against the Trump administration’s unlawful request for sensitive personal data from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Once again, Kobach does not have his priorities straight. While Democratic AGs have fought hard to restore crucial federal funds back to their states and protect SNAP data, Kobach brought a frivolous lawsuit against his own state’s governor that would have placed Kansans’ personal data at risk. What’s more, Kobach continues to fail to protect Kansas families against Trump’s unlawful actions, having joined zero of the lawsuits with Democratic AGs that are holding Trump accountable.
As the Topeka Capital-Journal reported, “[Gov.] Kelly in a statement accused Kobach of spreading misinformation about the situation. ‘It is unfortunate that Attorney General Kobach decided to engage in low-rent political theater, wasting taxpayer dollars, and spreading misinformation…Had the Attorney General met with my office prior to filing his lawsuit, as my office had requested, we could have explained the issue without having to go through the time and expense of the court. It is clear from the court’s order that the Attorney General’s arguments were without merit.’”
Statement from Carolyn Fiddler, Communications Director, DAGA:
“Kris Kobach clearly has zero interest in fighting for the people of Kansas and immense interest in letting Trump continue to violate the U.S. Constitution. Kansans deserve better than Kris Kobach as their attorney general. And come next November, we’ll help make that happen.”
