ICYMI: MAGA Miyares Tries to Eject Press from Public Campaign Stop, Refuses to Answer Questions

Journalists in attendance were physically blocked from viewing event

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, The Daily Progress reported that Virginia GOP AG Jason Miyares “tried and failed to remove press from a campaign stop outside Charlottesville last week.”  This is a bad look for a candidate who has still refused to publicly condemn the Trump administration’s attack on Virginia’s federal workforce.

The article continues, ‘“MAGA Miyares may run from the press, but he can’t outrun his record of attacking Medicaid, threatening Virginians’ fundamental reproductive freedoms, and allowing Donald Trump to take a hammer to Virginia’s workforce and economy,’ Georgia Greenleaf, Communcations Director for Miyares’ Democratic opponent Jay Jones, told The Daily Progress. ‘If Miyares is too weak to answer questions from the press, then he’s too weak to serve as Attorney General.’”

Key highlights:

  • “And even after the press was admitted by the owner of the business hosting the stop, campaign staffers stood between journalists and the candidate, blocking their view.”
  • “Neither Miyares nor his team disclosed why, especially since the invitation was posted publicly, the business remained open to the public throughout the campaign stop and the gathering was held at a coffee shop that has become a regular campaign stop for Virginia Republicans where the press has been admitted in the past without hesitation.”

  • “Upon arrival, Cofield approached Daily Progress journalists and asked them to identify themselves before instructing them to leave.”

  • “But after being readmitted and taking their seats, Miyares’ campaign staff stood in between Daily Progress journalists and the candidate, blocking their view.”

  • “Miyares did not make himself available for an interview after the campaign stop.”
