MAGA Miyares Won’t Stand Up for Virginia Students

Virginia’s AG continues to make zero effort to protect the Commonwealth from Trump administration policies

Washington, DC – This week, after Democratic attorneys general in 20 states and the District of Columbia sued the Trump administration for attempting to unlawfully dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares is shockingly silent.

In the 2022-2023 school year alone, the Department of Education allocated $2.6 billion to Virginia to ensure that students with disabilities and those from low-income areas receive equal access to high-quality education. AG Miyares’ failure to stand up to Trump puts those funds and students at risk.

Disappointingly, this isn’t even the first time Miyares has stood on the sidelines while the president’s policies hurt Virginians.

The Republican AG has also refused to stand up to Trump and join other coalition lawsuits that would protect the Commonwealth, including the unauthorized mass firings of federal employees and the freeze of critical federal funds for programs such as child care and food assistance.

Statement from Carolyn Fiddler, DAGA’s Director of Communications:

“MAGA Miyares is demonstrating yet again why he is unfit to serve the Commonwealth. The so-called ‘people’s protector’ apparently does not extend that protection to the 1.2 million public school students in Virginia, many of whom rely on funds distributed from the U.S. Department of Education. Miyares’ refusal to defend Virginia’s most vulnerable students and families is shameful.

“MAGA Miyares’ blind loyalty to Trump hurts Virginians. The Commonwealth deserves a better attorney general, and come November, Virginians will replace him with an AG who will serve everyone.”
