SEAT FLIPPED: DAGA Applauds Arizona AG-Elect Kris Mayes on Victory Following Recount
December 29, 2022
Arizona is DAGA’s Second Red-to-Blue Flip This Cycle
Washington, DC — The Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) congratulates Kris Mayes on winning the Arizona Attorney General’s seat following the final results in the mandatory recount. Attorney-General Elect Mayes beat far-right Republican extremist Abe Hamadeh to bring Democratic leadership back to the Arizona Office of Attorney General. She will become part of the most diverse class of Democratic attorneys general in history, as she becomes Arizona’s first openly LGBTQIA+ AG and the first mother to be Attorney General of Arizona. Arizona is the second seat DAGA flipped from red to blue this cycle.
Statement from Geoff Burgan, Communications Director, Democratic Attorneys General Association:
“We applaud Kris Mayes and her entire campaign on winning the Arizona Attorney General race and for flipping this seat from red to blue. Attorney General-elect Mayes beat a far-right, 2020 election denier with extreme and dangerous positions — and she did it by standing firm for what she believes in: defending Arizonans’ rights under their state’s constitution, including their right to abortion. She is a fierce defender of environmental protections, civil rights, and public safety who will defend democracy and restore integrity and ethics to the Arizona Attorney General’s office. She will always put people above politics.
“As AG, we know Mayes will bring the same energy she brought to her race to her work protecting Arizona communities. We look forward to welcoming Kris Mayes into our room of Democratic AGs.”
