Washington, D.C.— With Montana Governor Steve Bullock’s Presidential Run announcement, two former attorneys general now join the ranks of 2020 Democratic hopefuls: U.S. Senator from California Kamala Harris and Montana Governor Steve Bullock. Democratic Attorneys General have long stood as the legal backbone of the Party and continue to bring that expertise to offices across the country. Since the 1970s:

• 21 Democratic AGs have gone on to be elected governor;
• 16 served as members of Congress;
• At least 11 served in an administration or were appointed as a U.S. attorney or federal judge;
• 5 are current U.S. Senators; and
• 1 has been elected President of the United States and 1 as Vice President.

Throughout the Trump administration, Democratic AGs are the proven front lines against the President’s disrespect for the rule of law, taking him to court on a range of issues from reproductive justice to immigration and healthcare. Now, two leading former Democratic Attorneys General are running to bring that same level of accountability to the Oval Office—and  they are highlighting their experience as state AGs as part of their message to voters about their leadership and effectiveness.

Democrats now hold 27 AG seats nationwide, representing the majority of the U.S. population (58 percent) and states responsible for the majority of U.S. GDP (63.1 percent). They are the most diverse group of Democratic AGs in history.
