Statement from DAGA Co-Chairs on SCOTUS Decision in June Medical
June 29, 2020
WASHINGTON, D.C.— The Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) Co-Chairs Massachusetts AG Maura Healey and Oregon AG Ellen Rosenblum released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in June Medical Services vs. Russo.
Statement from Massachusetts AG Maura Healey and Oregon AG Ellen Rosenblum, Co-Chairs of the Democratic Attorneys General Association:
“Today’s decision is a victory for the rule of law. But the underlying case itself should sound the alarm for the majority of Americans who believe in protecting the right to access abortion. Extremists will continue their barrage of attacks on reproductive rights and we stand ready to fight back. This is why we are committed to electing leaders up and down the ballot, including Democratic Attorneys General, who will fight to protect reproductive rights.”
ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND:
- In December 2019, a coalition of 22 Democratic AGs signed onto a brief in support of June Medical Services asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse a decision by the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that upheld Louisiana’s law restricting access to abortion.
- In November 2019, Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) announced the committee would only endorse Democratic Attorney General candidates who publicly commit to protecting reproductive rights, including access to abortion. The first national Democratic committee to create such a standard for endorsements.
