Statement on Republican AGs Politically Motivated, Legally Shotty, and Wasteful Effort Backing the National Rifle Association

December 24, 2020

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) released the following statement from Executive Director Sean Rankin regarding the amicus brief filed by a group of extremist Republican AGs defending the National Rifle Association (NRA) in a lawsuit brought by New York AG Letitia James to dissolve the foundation after widespread fraud, abuse, and corruption were found at the highest level of leadership within the organization.

Statement from Sean Rankin, Executive Director of the Democratic Attorneys General Association

“Once again, Republican Attorneys General have demonstrated that they either fail to understand the law or choose to ignore it. Following up the ridiculous brief supporting throwing out millions of Americans votes and a litany of other frivolous actions this year, Republican AGs, once again, showed a shocking lack of appreciation for the rule of law and basic democratic principles.”

“Republican AGs chose to throw support behind the NRA in a desperate attempt to push back on New York AG Tish James’ lawsuit to dissolve the NRA – a suit based on well-detailed and thoroughly investigated allegations of fraud, abuse, and corruption. To suggest dismissal of this legal complaint and demagogue about ‘gun rights’ over the elements of wrongdoing by the NRA does injustice to the truth and makes a mockery of the important office these Republicans proclaim to uphold. While AG James holds one of the most powerful special interest groups accountable, Republican AGs pander to the NRA – fact and law be damned.”

“We will continue to sound the alarm for voters about these misguided actions and continued waste of taxpayer dollars for political gain. Voters deserve state AGs who do not bend to political pressure and who will fight for them, not special interests.”

Our democracy can't wait.
