Intro

Rob Bonta was sworn in as California’s 34th Attorney General on April 23, 2021. He is the first person of Filipino descent and the second Asian American to hold the position.

Early Life and Education

AG Bonta’s passion for justice stems from his upbringing as a “child of the civil rights movement,” where his activist parents worked for United Farm Workers. AG Bonta attended Yale University, where he was captain of the soccer team and would mentor fellow students of color, before attending Yale Law School.

Career Highlights

AG Bonta spent nine years as a Deputy City Attorney for the City and County of San Francisco, representing its employees and protecting Californians from exploitation and racial profiling. He eventually ran for office in Alameda County and in 2012 became the first Filipino American in the California state legislature. In the state Assembly, Rob became a leader in the fight for racial, economic, and environmental justice, leading efforts to outlaw for-profit prisons, overhauling sentencing for minor cannabis charges, protecting renters, and more.

Attorney General Accomplishments

As Attorney General, Rob Bonta launched the Housing Justice Team to advance housing access, affordability, and equity in California; secured a ruling that the Trump Administration’s directives to terminate National Institutes of Health (NIH) grants to public health research institutions in plaintiff states were unlawful; and partnered with California Governor Gavin Newsom to sue the Trump administration for illegally deploying the California National Guard to Los Angeles during protests against Trump’s immigration policy.

Personal Life

AG Bonta is married to Mia Bonta, and they are the proud parents of three children.
