Intro
Josh Kaul was sworn in as Wisconsin’s 45th Attorney General on January 7, 2019. Josh’s top priority is public safety. Under his leadership, the Wisconsin Department of Justice has worked to combat the opioid epidemic and the increasing use of meth in Wisconsin, to make our schools and communities safer from gun violence, and to pass legislation designed to prevent Wisconsin from having another backlog of untested sexual assault kits. Josh is also committed to fighting for clean and safe drinking water and against climate change and to protecting the rights of Wisconsinites.
Early Life and Education
Kaul grew up in Oshkosh and Fond du Lac. He attended public schools and played high school football and baseball. Kaul went to college at Yale University. He majored in history and economics and graduated with honors. Kaul earned his law degree at Stanford, where he was president of the Stanford Law Review.
Career Highlights
As an Assistant United States Attorney in Baltimore, Kaul prosecuted murderers, gang members, and drug traffickers. He served as the lead prosecutor in a case in which three defendants were convicted of conspiracy to commit murder in aid of racketeering, and he was the lead prosecutor through the original indictment of members of rival gangs that operated in the Cherry Hill neighborhood in Baltimore. As an attorney in private practice, Kaul worked on a challenge to restrictive voting measures in Wisconsin that resulted in a finding by a federal district court that several of the challenged measures were unconstitutional. Kaul was also one of the attorneys involved in the successful challenge to voting restrictions that were enacted in North Carolina in 2013.

Personal Life
Kaul lives in Madison with his wife, Lindsey, and their two young sons, Simon and Henry. Kaul is the proud owner of one share of the Green Bay Packers.
