Brian Schwalb was sworn in as only the second-ever independently-elected District of Columbia Attorney General on January 2, 2023. He grew up in D.C. and is a third-generation Washingtonian. He attended Duke University before earning his law degree from Harvard Law School. After completing a two-year judicial clerkship following law school, Brian served as a trial attorney in the tax division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Eventually, he entered private practice where he represented individuals, businesses, nonprofits, and families in cases, including those injured in excessive and unconstitutional police force, people defrauded out of assets, and those fighting for their lives on death row.
Brian is a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He previously served in leadership at Venable, including firm-wide Vice Chairman and then Partner-in-Charge of their D.C. office.
