BOO: Nothing’s Scarier this Halloween than the Republicans Running for AG in Pennsylvania and North Carolina
October 31, 2024
Undermining democracy, restricting abortion access, opposing gun violence prevention measures – oh my!
Washington, DC – There’s a chill in the air on Halloween – a breeze passes by and… BOO! It’s Republican extremists Dave Sunday of Pennsylvania and Dan Bishop of North Carolina who are both running for attorney general in their respective states. Frightening!
But nothing is scarier this Halloween than their far-right views and dangerous policies that are too extreme for the people of their states.
With just five days left until Election Day, here are some of the problematic issues with these extremist GOP candidates that you may have not heard about:
Dave Sunday – Pennsylvania
Abortion:
Dave Sunday has tried to hide his stance on abortion – and he has repeatedly refused in two debates to say that he would protect abortion rights, instead making clear he would defend any extremist anti-abortion law passed by the state politicians. He also failed to rule out prosecuting patients for having an abortion.
As reported by The York Dispatch, “…Sunday declined to answer a question about abortion — much as he has throughout the campaign.”
Gun Violence Prevention:
As Spotlight PA reports, Sunday has been endorsed by a radical self-proclaimed “no compromise” gun rights group, Gun Owners of America. Spotlight PA stated “The group’s Pennsylvania state director, Val Finnell, wrote that Sunday had returned a survey and that Finnell could ‘say with confidence that [Sunday] is AGAINST Universal Registration Checks and Red Flag Gun Confiscation Orders…’ Sunday declined to tell Spotlight PA whether he supports the extreme risk protection order bill the state House passed…”
Horrifying.
Buying the AG election:
Sunday’s campaign is bankrolled and propped up by PA billionaire Jeffrey Yass’s PAC. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported out “The early ad buys by the PAC supporting Sunday gave DePasquale’s campaign fodder to claim Yass was trying to ‘buy the Office of the Attorney General for Dave Sunday,’ DePasquale’s campaign manager, Carver Murphy, said in a statement.”
Additionally, the Pennsylvania Capital-Star disclosed “a large chunk of spending on behalf of Republican Dave Sunday isn’t visible to voters in his latest campaign finance report.” The large chunk being $5.5 MILLION.
Unnerving.
Dan Bishop – North Carolina
Abortion:
In Congress, Bishop has supported and co-sponsored a nationwide abortion ban that would ban abortion before many women even know they’re pregnant, with no exceptions for rape of incest, and that would allow throwing doctors in prison for up to five years.
And, as Cardinal & Pine reported, “As a member of the North Carolina General Assembly in 2019, Bishop expressed support for a restrictive anti-abortion law in Alabama, which NPR noted was “considered the most restrictive abortion law in the United States” at the time. The law sought to ban abortions except in cases where the mother’s life was at risk or if there was a fatal anomaly in the fetus. There were no exceptions for rape or incest in that bill.”
Bishop also told the News and Observer “I think it’s wrong to have an abortion in the case of rape or incest, just as it would be wrong to take the life of a child born to incest.”
As an AG, Bishop would put patient’s lives in danger.
The Author of the “Bathroom Bill”
Bishop is perhaps most well known for authoring the disastrous HB2 “bathroom bill” that discriminated against LGBTQ+ North Carolinians and cost the state billions of dollars in lost revenue and economic development.
Election Denier
Even more bone-chilling is that Bishop is a promoter of the “Big Lie” – he has denied the results of the 2020 election and voted against certifying the results.
It’s clear Bishop would put politics over people, just as he always has. He cannot be trusted.
Ghoulish Allies
As if wanting to be Mark Robinson’s “sidekick” wasn’t enough, Bishop is looking forward to being partners with MAGA extremist AG Ken Paxton.
In a recent interview on “Bannon’s War Room,” Bishop said he wants to “join the fight with [Texas Attorney General] Ken Paxton.” Bishop has also previously unapologetically praised Paxton as an “example” for him as Attorney General.
Terrifying.
These are just some of the allies and people Bishop surrounds himself with. He continues to prove time and again that he is too extreme for North Carolina and is not fit to be AG.
