Charlotte Observer Editorial Board Slams Dan Bishop for His Role in the Brewing Government Shutdown

Bishop’s Shutdown Could Threaten Veterans’ Benefits, America’s Economy

Washington, DC — The federal government is set to shutdown this weekend as far-right extremist Rep. Dan Bishop and his fellow MAGA Republicans are continuing to play political games — including threatening the pay of U.S. military personnel and hurting the U.S. economy.

The Charlotte Observer’s Editorial Board slammed Bishop’s reckless behavior as he runs for Attorney General in 2024:

“Throughout his political career, Bishop has consistently been someone willing to take extreme measures, regardless of the consequences. He may have been able to get away with that behavior in his solidly Republican district, but it’s an odd strategy for someone who is running for attorney general — a statewide office — in 2024.”

Statement from Emily Trifone, DAGA’s Deputy Communications Director:

“Dan Bishop’s shutdown is threatening the pay of America’s military personnel and North Carolina’s working families with his extreme MAGA brand of politics. He’s too extreme to be Attorney General.”

A Republican government shutdown would force some military personnel and law enforcement officers to work without pay. In North Carolina, there are more than 94,000 active duty military personnel.

It would also hurt America’s economy — three previous government shutdowns in 2013, 2018, and 2019 cost American taxpayers nearly $4 billion. A government shutdown jeopardizes the country’s economic progress and harms our servicemembers.

National polling shows that there is bipartisan opposition against this kind of reckless behavior from House Republicans like Dan Bishop and Marjorie Taylor Greene. Americans are against Bishop’s shutdown that will harm hard-working families, Social Security, veterans’ benefits and military pay, child care, and education.

Bishop, who’s running for North Carolina Attorney General next year, is holding up funding of the government with a reckless laundry list of extreme proposals. His inaction to pass a funding bill will hurt millions of Americans, including the North Carolinians he wants to represent.
