DAGA Co-Chairs on Republican AGs Supporting Hyde Amendment

June 23, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) Co-Chairs Massachusetts AG Maura Healey and Nevada AG Aaron Ford released the following statement reacting to Republican AGs letter calling on Congressional leaders to put the Hyde Amendment back into President Biden’s proposed budget.

Statement from Massachusetts AG Maura Healey and Nevada AG Aaron Ford, Co-Chairs of the Democratic Attorneys General Association

“Access to abortion care should not be limited to those who can independently afford it. That President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris did not include the Hyde Amendment’s limiting and discriminatory language in the budget proposal is an acknowledgment that the policy disproportionately harms communities of color and people without private insurance, often the people most in need of assistance.”

“Democratic AGs will always stand up and fight for people’s rights to the care they and their medical providers deem appropriate, including reproductive care. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for our Republican AG colleagues who time and time again have sought to impose their beliefs on others.”

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND

  • In 2019, DAGA became the first National Political Party Committee to announce it will only endorse candidates who support the right to access abortion and publicly commit to protecting reproductive rights.
