DAGA Condemns Disturbing, Undemocratic Actions by Tennessee GOP

April 8, 2023

Washington, DC — The Co-Chairs for the Democratic Attorneys General Association (DAGA) released the following statement in response to the Tennessee GOP’s expulsion of two Black lawmakers, Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, over their protest against gun violence following the tragic mass shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville.

Statement from DAGA Co-Chairs Delaware AG Kathy Jennings and Nevada AG Aaron Ford:

“The stunning hypocrisy on display in Tennessee is an affront to our country’s democratic foundations, and a shocking response from Tennessee Republicans to a mass shooting that took six lives far too soon. Instead of taking action to stem the bloodshed in this country, Tennessee Republicans chose to choke off debate and silence dissent.

“Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson’s bravery and moral clarity have touched the soul of our country. They are part of the growing chorus of Americans and elected officials who refuse to sit idly by in the face of gun violence, and their selfless actions will not be forgotten. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with every elected official standing up against the gun lobby with their voices and their votes.”
