DAGA Congratulates New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy for Winning Re-election, Keeping Appointed Attorney General Seat in Democratic Hands

November 4, 2021

Washington, DC — Last night, Gov. Phil Murphy won re-election in New Jersey, securing the appointment of the New Jersey attorney general seat in January 2022 under his Democratic leadership. Following the win, Sean Rankin, Executive Director of the Democratic Attorneys General Association, released the following statement:

“The Democratic Attorneys General Association is proud to congratulate Gov. Phil Murphy on his historic re-election. With this win, Gov. Murphy has ensured the Office of the Attorney General remains in Democratic hands. With his previous appointments of former New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, and current New Jersey Acting Attorney General Andrew Bruck, Gov. Murphy has selected leaders who have worked tirelessly to protect and serve the people of New Jersey.”

While the office of attorney general is directly elected in 43 states and Washington, D.C, selected by the state Legislature in Maine and by the state Supreme Court in Tennessee, New Jersey is one of 5 remaining states where the attorney general is appointed by the governor.
