DAGA Statement on the Acquittal of Ken Paxton

September 16, 2023

Washington, DC — After a historic impeachment trial of the corrupt and suspended Texas AG Ken Paxton, the GOP-controlled Texas Senate has voted to acquit Paxton. Paxton had 20 articles of impeachments against him — alleged bribery, misapplication of public resources, false statements in official records, obstruction of justice and more — based on his relationship with a real estate investor and political donor.

Statement from Michelle Ortiz, Executive Director, Democratic Attorneys General Association:

“We’re deeply disappointed in today’s decision on behalf of Texans all across the state. For the better part of a decade, Texans have suffered under AG Paxton’s decisions and betrayal of the public trust – from attacking LGBTQ+ and women’s rights, to using his office’s power and resources to his personal advantage. Paxton even undermined our country’s founding democratic principles with his specious and ill-fated attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election in the U.S. Supreme Court.

“The Attorney General is supposed to be the People’s Lawyer; the Office of Attorney General affects the daily lives of every person living in the state. It is not an office that caters to the personal whims and wishes of the elected official who holds it, and it is a tragedy that Ken Paxton has treated his office as such.

“DAGA has run competitive races in Texas in 2018 and 2022, and we will do so again in 2026 to oust him from office.”
