FACT CHECK: PRESIDENT TRUMP’s LYING ABOUT PROTECTING PEOPLE WITH PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS

March 6, 2020

Last night, during a Fox News town hall, President Trump once again lied about protecting the more than 130 million Americans who have a pre-existing condition – misleading the American people into thinking he is on their side when it comes to health care. Trump is blatantly lying.

FALSE: “Preexisting conditions, 100% we take care of” President Donald Trump

FACT CHECK: The Trump administration PROACTIVELY joined a coalition of Republican AGs led by Texas AG Ken Paxton in a lawsuit to strike down the Affordable Care Act. The case, California vs. Texas (formerly Texas vs. US), will be heard by the Supreme Court next term.

If the GOP sabotage is successful, 20 Million Americans will lose health care coverage and protections for 130+ Million Americans with pre-existing conditions would evaporate. The uninsured rate will increase by 65 percent.

While the health care debate stalled in Congress and the GOP has failed to come up with a replacement for the ACA, a coalition of Democratic AGs led by California AG Xavier Becerra have been fighting back in the courts to defend the Affordable Care Act and protect health care for millions of Americans.

ELECTORAL CONSEQUENCES: Health care is a winning issue. In fact, according to recent polling, it’s a top voting issue for voters going into November. Four of the Republican AGs on the lawsuit are on the ballot: Indiana AG Curtis Hill, Missouri AG Eric Schmitt, Utah AG Sean Reyes, and West Virginia AG Patrick Morrisey. Voters in Indiana, Missouri, Utah, and West Virginia will have the opportunity to hold these GOP AGs accountable at the ballot.

“We have a message for voters in states like Indiana, Missouri, Utah, and West Virginia: if you care about your health care, vote Democrat for Attorney General. We need leaders who will not waste your taxpayer dollars attempting to strip health care from your family and community like your current Republican AG is doing right now. It’s that simple. Health care is on the ballot in 2020, and so are Republican AGs who are on the wrong side of history” said DAGA Executive Director Sean Rankin.
