Raúl Torrez was sworn in as New Mexico’s 32nd Attorney General on January 1, 2023. Born and raised in New Mexico, he attended Harvard University, the London School of Economics, and Stanford Law School. He returned home to New Mexico and worked as an assistant district attorney and assistant attorney general. Raúl was also appointed to serve as a White House Fellow by President Barack Obama and served as a senior advisor to the Department of Justice, where he fought to reduce border violence, crack down on drug cartels, and reduce violent crime and domestic abuse in Indian Country.
Raúl has dedicated his career to making communities safer. From 2017 until his election as Attorney General, he served as Bernalillo County District Attorney, where he was recognized as a national leader for “smart on crime” policies, which have led to solving decades old rape cases. He’s also been recognized for his work in criminal justice reform, being one of the first prosecutors to make information about police misconduct available to the public, and piloting a program to provide full transparency about the demographic outcomes in our criminal justice system.
