Intro  

Nate Willems is the Democratic nominee for Attorney General in Iowa. 

Early Life and Education  

Willems grew up in Anamosa and earned a Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University. After college, he earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Iowa. 

Career Highlights  

From 2008 to 2012, Willems served in the Iowa House of Representatives where he fought to ensure every Iowan could access a quality public education and find a good paying job. He also passed key legislation to strengthen the rights of Iowa workers. 

Since then, Willems has been a full-time labor lawyer and partner at Rush & Nicholson, P.L.C., in Cedar Rapids, the state’s largest workers’ compensation firm. He’s secured historic victories in Iowa, including recovering $15 million for 11,000 current and former hospital and clinic workers. Willems also facilitated the largest-ever union wage increase in the state of Iowa for the Carter Lake police department, with veteran officers earning up to 42% raises. 

Attorney General Priorities 

As attorney general, Willems will protect Iowa’s workers by fighting wage theft, preventing unpaid overtime and worker misclassification, and holding corporations accountable for workplace injuries.  

Willems prioritizes public safety and will create strong working relationships with prosecutors and local law enforcement. He will also secure convictions for violent crimes and support the recruitment and retention of officers. 

Personal Life 

Willems lives in Mount Vernon with his wife, Maggie, and their three daughters. Willems and his family attend First Presbyterian Church, where he has previously served on the church session.
